Clinical Trial with Intraperitoneal Hyperthermic Perfusion for Intraabdominal Cancer with Peritoneal Metastasis

Abstract
Intraperitoneal hyperthermic perfusion(IPHP) and chemotherapy has been tried after surgical treatment for 8 patients with advanced intraabdominal cancer in Seoul Red Cross Hospital from early in 1990. There were two patients with peritoneal
recurrence
and metastasis, who have been in good health for a long time after IPHP combined with surgery.
Two 86-year-old and 65-year-old women were treated for recurrent colon cancer and cystadenocarcinoma by surgery and by thermal infusion and chemotherapy with a machine designed specifically for the treatment of cancers of serosal surface. After
completion of surgery, the patients peritoneal cavity was instilled with 3 liters of 5% lactated Ringers solution. They were then attached to hyperthermic perfusion system which elevated the temperature by warming to 44¡Éand recirculated the
effusion
solution with mitomycin(10 microgramer ml).
The patients postoperative courses were uneventful except for Pneumonia & exacervation of athmatic attack in the case of cystadenocarcinoma. These results show that IPHP using mitomycin(MMC) combined with surgery is a safe, reliable treatment for
patients with peritoneal implantation of intraabdominalcancers.
